Ancient & Modern
The City contains Roman remains, many architecturally noteworthy churches, the fifteenth century Guildhall, St Paul’s cathedral, the Bank of England and Lloyds of London. Founded by the Romans, it is London’s most historic quarter. The boundary is that of the medieval city wall. It contains some of London’s most recent architecture and, as the financial district, is London’s wealthiest area. Enjoy the hustle and bustle Monday–Friday or the tranquility at weekends, when the offices and banks are closed. Even during the week there is peace and calm in its hidden gardens.
