London’s New Skyline
The names Shard, Gherkin, Cheesegrater, Scalpel, Pinnacle, Helter Skelter, Walkie Talkie and Heron give a human feel to the modern towers which have transformed the City skyline, once punctuated by church spires. Not all contemporary architecture is tall towers. Scale, materials, style and use are as varied as the older buildings which surround them. New technology, transport and attitudes to environment offer a new dimension. Lord Rogers and Sir Norman Foster are the two most famous names, but there are many more.
